Appointments and promotions:
Thomas Schott has been named assistant athletic director for communications effective Feb. 1. He had been serving as the interim assistant athletic director for communications.
Ret. Air Force Col. Ronnie Wright has been named as the new director of Emergency Planning and Preparedness at Purdue. He will work to ensure the readiness of emergency responders.
Faculty and staff honors:
Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering, was the keynote speaker at the DesignCon 2007 conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The event was held Jan. 29 to Feb. 1. The conference was organized by the International Engineering Consortium, an organization geared toward industry professionals, educators and students in the field of engineering. Jamieson spoke about the most challenging issues facing today's young engineers and the global and technological trends driving change in the semiconductor industry. She also was named the 2007 International Engineering Consortium Fellow during the program. Jamieson was recognized for her contributions to education and engineering research. The consortium established the award in 1994 to recognize individuals who have contributed to the information industry in a significant manner.
Xiuli Qu, a doctoral student in the Purdue School of Industrial Engineering, was the Society for Health Systems' 2007 Student Paper Competition graduate division winner. Her paper, "Determining Provider Scheduling Templates in Open Access Clinics," will be presented at the 2007 Society for Health Systems annual conference to be held in New Orleans Feb. 23-25. Judging criteria for the award was based on originality, applicability, methodology, organization and quality of the paper. Winners received a stipend of $500 and travel expenses to the conference. The organization is a networking society for the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
