The dance troupe Diavolo will bring its gravity-defying program to Purdue Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse stage for a sold-out show at 7:30 p.m. April 19.

Since the original performance sold out, a matinee performance usually reserved for students will be open to the public. The performance, at 9:30 a.m. April 19, is a one-hour performance and dance demonstration geared to students in grades 6-12. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at campus box offices at (765) 494-3933.

The performances are presented by Purdue Convocations.

The Diavolo dancers - who also are trained as gymnasts, rock climbers, martial artists, stunt performers and actors - leap, fly and twirl against a backdrop of outrageous, surrealistic sets. Incorporating such everyday items as doors, chairs and stairways into their act, the 10-member ensemble examines the funny and frightening way individuals interact with their environment and creates metaphors for the challenge of relationships, the absurdities of life and the struggle to maintain humanity in an increasingly technological world.

Founded in 1992 in Los Angeles by Jacques Heim, Diavolo has attracted critics' attention from the very beginning. In 1993, the group was nominated for two Lester Horton Awards in Los Angeles. In 1995, the company made its European debut at the Edinburgh Festival where it was named Best of the Fest by The London Independent and Critic's Choice by The Guardian. The company also received three Lester Horton Awards in 1995 for the work "Tete en L'Air." In 1997, artistic director Heim was recognized by the Los Angeles Times as one of "36 Faces to Watch."

Tickets for the matinee are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.
