Brees, Purdue fraternity to rebuild New Orleans homesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Thirty-three Purdue University Sigma Chi fraternity members are headed to New Orleans on Sunday (May 6) to help former Purdue quarterback Drew Brees rebuild houses damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Brees, a Sigma Chi member from 1998 to 2001, is now an all-pro quarterback with the New Orleans Saints. His Brees Dream Foundation is paying room, board and in-town transportation costs for 100 Sigma Chi members nationwide who will be in New Orleans for the Habitat for Humanity project that runs from May 7-12.
"I know it will be a rewarding experience for all of them and an opportunity to experience for themselves the culture and charm of this great city," Brees said. "I cannot think of a better way for the Sigma Chi brothers to get together and share fellowship while at the same time making a tremendous impact in a city that needs it desperately."
Brees said that he is looking forward to meeting the fraternity members.
"This is a great opportunity for our chapter ... to provide some much-needed help in that storm-damaged region," said Purdue Delta Delta Chapter President Chris Horney, a junior from Fishers, Ind. "It also gives us the opportunity to see Brother Brees, who many of us have never met."Brees, an academic All-American, led Purdue to the Rose Bowl during his senior year. In addition to being named a 2007 Pro Bowl quarterback, Amtrak NFL Player of the Year and the Halas Award winner (for overcoming adversity), Brees also earned honors this year for his work away from the football field, including the Distinguished American Award from the New Orleans Chapter of the National Football Foundation and the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
