Córdova to hold ice cream social July 16 on first day as Purdue president

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - France Córdova has invited the Purdue University community to an ice cream social Monday, July 16, her first day on the job.

All Purdue students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the event, "Handshakes and Milkshakes," which will be held 3:30- 5 p.m. on the steps of Hovde Hall and on the adjacent Purdue Mall. The treats will be provided by Pappy's Sweet Shop, which is located in the Purdue Memorial Union.

"My top priority is to meet students, faculty and staff to learn more about them and to listen to their ideas," Córdova said. "My husband, Chris Foster, and I look forward to this excellent opportunity to interact with everyone in an informal, relaxed setting."

On July 19, Córdova will make her first major public appearance as Purdue president at the Indiana Black Expo in Indianapolis. She will attend a corporate lunch at the Expo on July 19, and the next day she will be the keynote speaker at the Expo's Youth Summit as part of Purdue Day at the Expo.

Córdova comes to Purdue from the University of California, Riverside, where she has served as chancellor since 2002.

She previously was vice chancellor for research and a professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Before that, she was the first woman and youngest person to hold the position of NASA chief scientist.
