Purdue plans events for National Disability Employment Awareness Month

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue's Affirmative Action Office is offering several events in October in recognition and celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The theme for 2007 is Workers with Disabilities: Talent for a Winning Team. Congress designated October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month in 1988. The Office of Disability Employment Policy, an agency in the Department of Labor, is in charge of this national awareness month.

Purdue has a number of events that are intended to increase the community's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities. The events are free and open to the public, but participants are encouraged to make reservations. Events are as follows:

* Oct. 11. 10 a.m. to noon. Stewart Center, Room 318. Americans with Disabilities Act for Supervisors. This workshop, open to all campus supervisors, will examine what constitutes a disability, how to recognize an employee's request for a reasonable accommodation and what to do next.

* Oct. 16. 2-3:30 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union, Room 103. Americans with Disabilities Act Audio Conference. This workshop is the first session in the 2007-08 Americans with Disabilities Act Audio Conference Series presented by the Great Lakes ADA and Accessible IT Center. The program is designed to offer individuals advanced information on various Americans with Disabilities Act-related issues.

* Oct. 23. 1-3 p.m. Stewart Center, Room 307. Americans with Disabilities Act Overview. In this workshop, learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act - what the law means, its history and what is in store in the future.
