Two lumber workshops scheduled for Elkhart

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Two workshops related to lumber grading and manufacturing of hardwoods will take place in October in Elkhart, Ind.

Hardwood Lumber Grading and Manufacturing is a three-day event and will be October 16–18. Walnut Lumber Grading and Manufacturing will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 19. Both workshops will be at the Ramada Inn in Elkhart.

"These two workshops will give a better understanding of hardwood grading rules and help participants develop a keener sense of value and yield," said Daniel Cassens, a Purdue University professor of forestry and natural resources and workshop coordinator.

The Hardwood Lumber Grading and Manufacturing workshop will provide participants with a detailed look at National Hardwood Lumber Association(NHLA) grading rules. Registrants also will engage in hands-on activities, such as grading various species of lumber.

Former NHLA inspector and district chief Tim Kassis of Kretz Lumber Co. will instruct the seminar and discuss topics including kiln dried and surface lumbered rules, developing long-term relationships in lumber buying and selling, and proper edging and trimming. Cassens will lead a discussion of wood moisture relationships and drying.

Enrollment is limited. Registration for this three-day event is $200, which covers the cost of the NHLA rules book, other materials, lunch and breaks.

The Walnut Lumber Grading and Manufacturing workshop will give attendees a more thorough understanding of walnut grading rules, which are different than standard grades.

"Walnut from the central Midwest is some of the best stock and is in high demand," Cassens said. "It is important for anyone who saws, sells or purchases walnut lumber to have an understanding of the unique rules pertaining to grading this wood."

Kassis will instruct this workshop as well. He will discuss NHLA rules for grading walnut lumber, demonstrate this technique and allow attendees to practice grading boards.

Enrollment is limited.  Registration is $75, which covers the cost of the NHLA rules book, breaks and lunch.

The cost of additional meals and lodging is not included. For room reservations, contact the Ramada Inn at (574) 262-1581. For more information on these two workshops, call (765) 494-3644 or e-mail Cassens at
