Purdue Extension part of woodland and wildlife workshopWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service will co-sponsor the Tri-State Woodland and Wildlife Workshop from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 in Bryan, Ohio.
Forestry and wildlife experts from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan will lead sessions on topics including timber marketing, woodland insects and diseases, winter tree identification, tax considerations, inventorying woodlands, and timber harvesting. Nearly 20 sessions will be held.
Brian MacGowan, Purdue Extension wildlife specialist, will speak about nuisance wildlife management during the event.
MacGowan said the workshop's primary goal is to make landowners aware of the professional resources available to them, gain a better understanding of their woods and be able to apply what they learn.
During the workshop, attendees can choose to walk the woods with resource professionals and have the opportunity to identify trees in the field, measure trees and discuss woodland management strategies. They also may choose to attend a variety of indoor seminars.
"The challenge with woodland and wildlife management is that every case is different," MacGowan said. "We have found that offering an opportunity in both a field and classroom setting is the most rewarding for landowners and provides unique learning opportunities that simply cannot be done any other way."
Also sponsoring the workshop are the Ohio State University and Michigan State University Cooperative Extension Services; the Ohio Division of Forestry; the Maumee, Potawatomi, Wood-Land-Lakes and Sauk Trails Resource Conservation and Development Councils; the Natural Resources Conservation Service; and the Fulton County and Williams County (Ohio) Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Registration, which includes lunch, breaks and a woodland management resource CD, is $30 per person by Oct. 26 and $40 after Oct. 26. Preregistration is required.
