Appointments, honors and activities

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Brant Burleson, professor of communication, was awarded the 2009 B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award by the International Communication Association at the group's annual meeting in Chicago. The award recognizes outstanding scholars, teachers and advisers who serve as role models and who have had a major impact on the field of communication, by their own accomplishments and those of their former students.

— Purdue professors Jay P. Gore and Klein Ileleji are traveling to Zhejiang University in China this week as part of a project in bioenergy supported by the government of China and to discuss other collaboration opportunities in renewable energy. The exchange is part of a larger research project supported by the Chinese National Academy and academician Kifa Cen to support one professor, one graduate student and one center director to spend time at Zhejiang each year for the next five years. Ileleji is Purdue's project leader, and both professors will give lectures on Purdue's expertise in energy, biomass utilization and global sustainability. Gore also is director of Purdue's Energy Center in Discovery Park. Zhejiang University hosts the Chinese National Center for Bioenergy. It is located in the city of Hangzhou, located about 111 miles from Shanghai.

— Ahmed Elmagarmid, professor of computer science and the director of the Indiana Center for Database Systems and the Cyber Center in Discovery Park, was one of 20 academicians invited to attend the 2009 World Economic Forum on the Middle East. The forum, held May 15-17 in the Dead Sea, Jordan, was held to discuss the current economic crisis and its implications on the region. While at the forum, Elmagarmid participated in a plenary panel and breakout groups with world-renowned leaders. He also served as a panelist during a session on identifying the technology lead and served as one of the facilitators on an IT session held as part of the forum.
